Pizza + Espresso = Profit
What any pizza shop needs to start an espresso program:
1) The Espresso Machine
You can't have espresso without a reliable espresso machine. While several see the equipment as an expense, it is better viewed as an investment. Most espresso machines will pay for themselves in less than 4 months, even in low volume cafes. Astoria machines are built for longevity to make the absolute most out of your investment.
2) The Grinder
Having the perfect grind is critical to pulling shots of espresso. Every bean has its own optimal grind settings and will need to be adjusted accordingly. Thankfully, electronic grinders are extremely helpful, especially for less experienced baristas, as they are easier to program and waste less coffee over time, ultimately saving you money!
3) The Accessories
If you want to sell more than just espresso shots, you are going to need some accessories. Some suggested starter accessories for your coffee program include: 12, 22, & 34oz Stainless Steel frothing pitchers, a durable coffee tamper, brushes for cleaning your counter space and machine, a milk thermometer, and a graduated shot glass.
4) The Maintenance & Cleaning
Just like you change the oil or wash your car, your espresso machine needs some love every few months as well. If you don't want to spend thousands of dollars on repairs every year, it is imperative that you 1) have a strong water filter, 2) perform daily back-flushing/cleaning, and 3) perform preventative maintenance at least once every 6 months.
5) The Menu
Once you have your equipment, all that's left is to add it to your menu, but that doesn't mean it has to be complicated. You only need a few drinks to get you started. A simple starter menu could look like: Espresso - Single Shot, Espresso - Double Shot, Americano, Latte, and Cappuccino.
